Yep, it appears the hit action franchise Lethal Weapon could be getting a fifth feature.

Almost 20 years after the release of Lethal Weapon 4, stars Mel Gibson and Danny Glover and franchise director Richard Donner are all circling a potential fifth chapter. Deadline is reporting that the three are keen on tackling another picture, which would come to life at Warner Bros., the studio behind all four previous films.

If this does go ahead, the film will come with a script by Channing Gibson (of no relation to Mel Gibson), who penned Lethal Weapon 4 and whose credits include action pics Cradle 2 the Grave and Walking Tall.

Lethal Weapon was quite a hit in 1987. Written by Shane Black, the buddy-cop actioner told of a veteran LAPD cop (Glover) who is partnered with a younger, suicidal officer (Gibson). Three sequels followed, taking the franchise to a total haul of $US955.2 million (unadjusted).

Damon Wayans and Clayne Crawford star in a TV series adaptation of the same name. The Fox series recently wrapped its second season.
