The official trailer has arrived for Licorice Pizza, the latest film from writer-director Paul Thomas Anderson (There Will Be Blood, Boogie Nights, Magnolia, Punch Drunk Love).
The filmmaker heads back to the ’70s (Anderson’s Boogie Nights and Inherent Vice also looked at the period) in this tale of first love. The film tells the story of Alana Kane – played by Alana Haim, a member of pop rock band Haim, for which Anderson has directed a number of music videos – and Gary Valentine (newcomer Cooper Hoffman – son of the late Phillip Seymour Hoffman), and follows their journey growing up, running around and falling in love in the San Fernando Valley, 1973. Anderson looks to be exploring a few side angles too, such as the pitfalls of the cutthroat film industry of the time.
Anderson has himself a strong supporting cast, including Bradley Cooper as real-life Hollywood producer Jon Peters (who produced Cooper’s A Star is Born), Sean Penn, Tom Waits, Benny Safdie, and Maya Rudolph (Anderson’s partner). Ben Stiller is also credited, although that may be a small cameo.
Mark the date: Licorice Pizza will be in select US cinemas from November 26th and opens in Australian cinemas on February 3rd.
