Who would have thought that taking Logan in a dramatic, darkly violent and admittedly much more depressing direction would be such a winning move?

Apart from wide-spread critical acclaim, Logan clawed away at the box office, the R-rated (US classification) picture raking in an impressive $US616.8 million worldwide. It’s the most-successful Wolverine movie of the three.

Logan wasn’t necessarily crafted to be another universe-building piece in the X-Men franchise, but the film’s ending certainly left the door wide open for a continuation. Well, the wheels are starting to now turn on a potential spinoff/sequel focusing on X-23, aka Laura, the young mutant brilliantly played by Dafne Keen.

“We’re just working on a script,” director James Mangold confirmed to THR, explaining that the recent success of Wonder Woman has a hand in paving the way for a Laura-focused picture.

“Patty [Jenkins’] success with [Wonder Woman] only solidifies more for studios that there’s less to fear with a female protagonist. The more that keeps getting hit home, that ends up giving me more space turning around and going, ‘Well here we are with a female protagonist. That’s incredible. And what are we going to do with her?’ And that’s where we are with that [the Laura script] right now, dreaming.”

Fox has been confidently tackling different genres with their X-Men universe movies; dramatic western with Logan, zany adult action-comedy with Deadpool, and horror with the upcoming The New Mutants. It’s possible the untitled X-23 pic could among the future X films continuing the genre jumps. As producer Hutch Parker explained to THR:

“Yes, there are other facets of that character and some others potentially to explore in their own way. It may not be in the same exact tonality or with the same genre orientations as Logan, but I think part of what has been opened up in this universe to all of us now is, drawing on different genre traditions, there are new pathways to be opened for new characters that populate this universe.”

Until this X-23 / Laura movie is completely locked in and placed on a schedule, Fox has plenty of big-screen X-Men action coming our way. Next year alone we have Deadpool 2, set for US release on June 1; the aforementioned The New Mutants, to hit US cinemas on April 13; and X-Men: Dark Phoenix, opening in the States on November 2.

Stay tuned.
