Along with the first official image (above), the release date has been unveiled for Amazon‘s upcoming Lord of the Rings television series.
The still-untitled series based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s classic literary works will be premiering on Amazon Prime Video on Friday, September 2nd, 2022. The show will premiere in over 240 countries and territories around the world, with new episodes set to drop weekly thereafter.
The series will be exploring Tolkien’s fabled Second Age of Middle-earth’s history. Beginning in a time of relative peace, thousands of years before the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings books, the plot will follow an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared re-emergence of evil to Middle-earth.
The large cast includes, among many others, Cynthia Addai-Robinson (Power, Arrow), Robert Aramayo (Game of Thrones, where he played a young Ned Stark), Owain Arthur (A Confession), Maxim Baldry (Strike Back), Nazanin Boniadi, Morfydd Clark, Ismael Cruz Córdova, and Charles Edwards.
The show comes from showrunners and executive producers J.D. Payne & Patrick McKay, with episodes directed by J.A. Bayona (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, The Impossible, A Monster Calls), Charlotte Brändström (The Witcher, The Outsider) and Wayne Che Yip (Preacher, Hunters).
The image and release date announcement comes as the first season has now officially wrapped filming in New Zealand. This is one expensive project, expected to have cost over $US1 billion (yeah, BILLION) once post production is completed in 2022. Amazon beat out Netflix to acquire the project with an offer of $US250 million.
“The journey begins September 2, 2022 with the premiere of our original The Lord of the Rings series on Prime Video,” Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke said in a statement. “I can’t express enough just how excited we all are to take our global audience on a new and epic journey through Middle-earth! Our talented producers, cast, creative, and production teams have worked tirelessly in New Zealand to bring this untold and awe-inspiring vision to life.”
Said Payne and McKay: “As Bilbo says, ‘Now I think I am quite ready to go on another journey.’ Living and breathing Middle-earth these many months has been the adventure of a lifetime. We cannot wait for fans to have the chance to do so as well.”
A massive series on the way here! We’ll keep you up to date.
