Louis Leterrier to Direct Sacha Baron Cohen Comedy

Louis Leterrier, the director behind this year’s Now You See Me and 2008’s The Incredible Hulk, is set to direct the next comedy from Sacha Baron Cohen (Borat, Bruno). Variety has reported that Leterrier is set to direct Grimsby, a spy action-comedy for Paramount.

The film follows “a British black ops agent who is forced to go on the run with his long-lost brother, who is a northern English soccer hooligan.” It’s safe to assume that Baron Cohen will be taking plenty of shots at Britain in his next comedy.

Paramount bought the rights last August based on a pitch made by Baron Cohen and Phil Johnston, a writer on Disney’s Wreck-It Ralph.

Baron Cohen had apparently been searching for a director with experience in action films to helm his next film. Leterrier, who also directed Unleashed, Transporter 2 and Clash of the Titans, actively chased the project. He met repeatedly with Paramount executives and Baron Cohen in order to lock this in.

While Baron Cohen hasn’t exactly made a film as memorable as Borat in a while, he’s still a bankable commodity. His last straight-forward “film” (as opposed to those based on public pranks) was the so-so 2012 comedy The Dictator. Fingers crossed Leterrier and Baron Cohen prove to be a formidable team.
