Two of the upcoming Marvel films will be filmed Down Under.

Both Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Thor: Love and Thunder are to be filmed at Fox Studios in Sydney. Marvel is taking advantage of a proposed $24.1 million Location Incentive grant and support being put forth by the New South Wales Government.

“[Thor: Love and Thunder] is expected to invest over $178 million in our economy, create up to 2,500 jobs and use the services of around 1,650 businesses,” said Minister for Communications, Cyber Safety and the Arts, Paul Fletcher.

“Australia has an ongoing relationship with Marvel Studios and I’m very pleased they will return to our shores again next year to take advantage of our world-leading screen industry for the next instalment of the “Thor” franchise.”

Students at the Australian Film, Television and Radio School and the National Institute of Dramatic Arts will benefit from the big deal, with Marvel Studios poised to offer a trainee program that will help target skill shortages.

“Shooting Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Thor: Love and Thunder back-to-back will provide local crews with sustained, continuous employment opportunities,” said David Grant, vice-president from Marvel Studios.

“We will be working with local educational institutions in creating internship opportunities and would like to thank the Federal Arts Minister Paul Fletcher and the New South Wales Arts Minister Don Harwin for their invaluable support.”

The upcoming Thor film – with New Zealand Rangarok director Taika Waitit back at the helm – will find Chris Hemsworth back in the lead role, although this chapter will also be handing the titular mantel to Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster, as was announced at Comic-Con last week.

“Being able to stay home and put the kids to bed in their own home — as opposed to dragging them across the globe to various hotels — is, as a parent, hugely important,” said Hemsworth during the press conference.

“A lot of the scripts I read now… location is at the top of the list.”

Production on Thor: Love and Thunder will begin in March and filming will kick off in August 2020. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is scheduled to hit US cinemas on 12 February 2021 and Love and Thunder on 5 November 2021.
