The first trailer has arrived for Maze Runner: The Death Cure, the third and final film in the Y.A. sci-fi franchise that kicked off in 2014.
The final chapter in the saga finds Thomas (Dylan O’Brien) and his fellow escaped Gladers on a mission to save their friends. In order to do so, they must break into the WCKD-controlled labyrinth that is Last City.
Production on The Death Cure was halted for a number of months last year after an accident left O’Brien injured. Thankfully the actor made a full recovery, and now with American Assassin currently out, the finale of MTV’s Teen Wolf hitting small screens, and the third Maze Runner film on the way, it’s certainly a good time to be O’Brien fan.
The first film took $US348.3 million at the worldwide box office, while the sequel, Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, scored less with $US312.3 million. Time will tell if the franchise close brings back the fans, or whether it attracts newcomers. Fans of the first two pics should be comfortable; franchise director Wes Ball and screenwriter T.S. Nowlin are back in their respective roles.
The trailer below is more of a teaser – clocking in at around 1 minute in length – but it does show off a good amount in that time, starting off with snippets from the first two films before showcasing a big vehicle/train/aircraft action sequence. And there’s a glimpse of Thomas coming face to face with WCKD chancellor Ava Paige (Patricia Clarkson).
Maze Runner: The Death Cure, also starring Kaya Scodelario, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Giancarlo Esposito, Ki Hong Lee and Barry Pepper, will arrive in Australia on January 25 and opens in the US on January 26, 2018.
