A double cancellation wallop from Netflix.
The streamer has chosen not to move ahead with second seasons for both YA drama The Society and coming-of-age series I Am Not Okay with This, despite both well-received shows seemingly set to to continue. The Society had been officially greenlit for a second season and was eyeing a filming start in September, while I Am Not Okay with This had scripts written up for its second chapter and was also looking at a production start.
Netflix is putting it down to the extensive issues caused by COVID, which includes higher filming costs to ensure safety protocols and trying to lock in both cast and crew for what are now consistently unstable production schedules.
“We’ve made the difficult decision not to move forward with second seasons of The Society and I Am Not Okay With This,” Netflix said in a statement to Deadline, the outlet that broke the news.
“We’re disappointed to have to make these decisions due to circumstances created by COVID, and we are grateful to these creators, including: Jonathan Entwistle, Christy Hall, Shawn Levy, Dan Levine, Dan Cohen and Josh Barry at 21 Laps Entertainment for I Am Not Okay With This; Chris Keyser, Marc Webb and Pavlina Hatoupis for The Society; and all the writers, casts and crews who worked tirelessly to make these shows for our members around the world.”
I Am Not Okay with This star Sophia Lillis took to social media to share her disappointment in the news, posting: “I’m so sad that I Am Not Okay With This is over. Covid sucks!! It was one of the most fun projects I ever had the pleasure to be a part of and I’ll miss each and every one of you guys. We had a good run! I sincerely hope we can work together again one day. And a big thank you to everyone who supported this project, we couldn’t have done it without you.”
The Society leads Kathryn Newton and Gideon Adlon shared a video chat, in which they also expressed their sadness and thanked fans for all the support. Having this show stopped following quite the cliffhanger makes it especially frustrating for fans.
It will certainly be disappointing news for fans of both shows, but as has been proven before, make enough noise and there’s always a chance that the powers that be listen: #SaveTheSociety and #SaveIAmNotOkayWithThis.
