A big new trailer has arrived for Guillermo del Toro‘s next film, Nightmare Alley, boasting a cast that includes Bradley Cooper, Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara, Willem Dafoe, and Toni Collette, among others.
The Oscar-winning Pan’s Labyrinth, The Shape of Water and Pacific Rim filmmaker leaves behind the ghosts, creatures and giant robots for this one, an adaptation of the 1946 novel of the same name by William Lindsay Gresham (director Edmund Goulding previously adapted the book for the screen in 1947). As per the official synopsis, the plot tells of …
… “Charismatic but down-on-his-luck Stanton Carlisle (Cooper)”, who “endears himself to clairvoyant Zeena (Toni Collette) and her has-been mentalist husband Pete (David Strathairn) at a traveling carnival. He crafts a golden ticket to success, using this newly acquired knowledge to grift the wealthy elite of 1940s New York society. With the virtuous Molly (Mara) loyally by his side, Stanton plots to con a dangerous tycoon (Richard Jenkins) with the aid of a mysterious psychiatrist (Blanchett) who might be his most formidable opponent yet.”
Apart from that fantastic cast and an intriguing, ripe-for-backstabbing plot, the trailer shows off a gorgeous production, with del Toro reuniting with Mimic, Crimson Peak and The Shape of Water cinematographer Dan Laustsen. Expect carnage and eye-browsing moments in this one, too. The film has been handed an R rating in the U.S. for “strong/bloody violence, some sexual content, nudity and language.”
Nightmare Alley, also starring Ron Perlman, Mary Steenburgen, and David Strathairn, opens in the U.S. on December 17th and Australia on January 20th.
