Nicolas Winding Refn Thriller Series Going Forward with Amazon

Filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn, known for films such as Bronson, Drive, Only God Forgives and last year’s The Neon Demon, is moving ahead with his planned crime-thriller series.

Refn is teaming up with Amazon on the series, Too Old to Die Young, which has been greenlit for a 10-episode run. Variety broke the news, reporting that Refn will be directing and producing the series, as well as co-writing the script alongside executive producer Ed Brubaker (supervising producer and writer on HBO’s Westworld).

Too Old to Die Young is said to be in the vein of Refn’s Pusher trilogy. Those three films, the first two of which featured Mads Mikkelsen, focused on Danish criminals in different levels of the drug world. As Variety reports, the series…

“…explores the criminal underbelly of Los Angeles. […] It explores various characters’ existential journeys from being killers to becoming samurais in the city of angels.”

Apart from a stint on Westworld, Brubaker has experience writing superhero comics, with credits including Batman, Daredevil and Captain America.

No cast members have been locked in, but apparently three “notable male actors” have been offered parts. Filming begins later this year in L.A. Stay tuned…
