Take a look at the trailer that Netflix has released for Over the Moon, an impressive-looking upcoming CG-animated musical film.
Based on a classic Chinese myth, Over the Moon follows a science-passionate young girl who builds herself a rocket ship to travel to the moon and prove that a legendary Moon Goddess does indeed exist. Her mission finds her on an unexpected quest, with fantastical creatures and a whimsical land.
It’s a great trailer, mostly sticking to what appears to be the first act of the film and only teasing the imaginative turns the narrative takes once she blasts off. The animation is gorgeous, and the production as a whole looks to be in the wheelhouse of DreamWorks Animation and Disney•Pixar.
Perhaps the director here has something to do with the Disney-esque elements. Glen Keane worked for close to four decades as an animator at Disney, helping craft characters on The Little Mermaid, Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast, among other films. Keane took home an Oscar for Best Animated Short in 2018, winning alongside the late Kobe Bryant for the short Dear Basketball.
Also among the behind-the-scenes crew: John Kahrs (Frozen animator) co-directs, Audrey Wells (The Hate U Give) penned the script, Oscar winner Steven Price (Gravity) is behind the score, and Christopher Curtis, Marjorie Duffield and Helen Park have written the songs.
Over the Moon also holds a large ensemble voice cast, including Phillipa Soo, Ken Jeong, John Cho, Ruthie Ann Miles, Margaret Cho, Kimiko Glenn, Artt Butler, and Sandra Oh, as well as newcomers Cathy Ang and Robert G Chiu.
Looking forward to this one. Over the Moon will be streaming on Netflix later this year.
