We all knew this was coming, but it’s nevertheless disappointing having it confirmed.

Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen are not going to be appearing in X-Men: Apocalypse. Stewart confirmed what many had already suspected in an interview with Larry King (via Yahoo Movies).

When asked if he would be appearing in Bryan Singer’s upcoming film, Stewart responded, “No. Nor Sir Ian McKellen, either.”

Stewart said that he was learning more about the film and found that the film would “be looking very much at the earlier lives of all our characters,” so he couldn’t see them “making an appearance.”

X-Men: Apocalypse will be set in the 80s and will be focusing on the growing romance between Michael Fassbender’s Magneto and Jennifer Lawrence’s Mystique, and will of course tell of the struggle against the titular villain, aka En Sabah Nur, to be played by Oscar Isaac. We got a look at Apocalypse in the post-credit sequence in X-Men: Days of Future Past.

Although Stewart and McKellen may not be around in Apocalypse, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they’re done with X-Men films. After all, there are Gambit and Deadpool outings on the way.

X-Men: Apocalypse is set to hit U.S. cinemas on May 27, 2016.
