Fox has unveiled the first trailer for The Predator, the long-awaited next chapter in the horror-action franchise.
The new film finds a young boy (played by reliable Room and Wonder star Jacob Tremblay) accidentally triggering the return of these lethal aliens. Yep. And, by the way, these new Predators are now smarter and deadlier than ever; they’ve genetically upgraded themselves with DNA from other species, you see.
While we don’t get a huge amount of footage in this first-look trailer, we do get a taste of what director and co-writer Shane Black (the Iron Man 3 and The Nice Guys helmer who did uncredited script work and played Hawkins in the original film) has in store. At least from this look, it appears Black’s going for a more slick, blockbuster type of outing, but there isn’t too much in this marketing piece that really drives up that excitement, at least for this writer. It also seems to be missing that grittiness and atmospheric horror vibe that I was hoping for, but it’s early days yet; we’ll see.
Fred Dekker, who co-wrote 1987’s The Monster Squad with Black and also directed that film, has co-written the screenplay here.
The Predator, starring Boyd Holbrook, Olivia Munn, Thomas Jane, Sterling K. Brown, Keegan-Michael Key, Alfie Allen, Yvonne Strahovski and Edward James Olmos, will arrive in Australian cinemas on September 13 and US cinemas on September 14.
Official synopsis for The Predator:
From the outer reaches of space to the small-town streets of suburbia, the hunt comes home in Shane Black’s explosive reinvention of the Predator series. Now, the universe’s most lethal hunters are stronger, smarter and deadlier than ever before, having genetically upgraded themselves with DNA from other species. When a young boy accidentally triggers their return to Earth, only a ragtag crew of ex-soldiers and a disgruntled science teacher can prevent the end of the human race.
