‘Project Power’: Watch How Machine Gun Kelly Was Lit on Fire in Jamie Foxx Fight Scene

Netflix has released a behind-the-scenes look at how one of Project Power‘s fiery action sequences was tackled.

The scene in focus is with Colson Baker, who you may know as musician Machine Gun Kelly. Baker plays Newt, a guy who has taken a pill that bestows the user with a superpower – a power that’s different for everyone and could even kill you on the spot. For Newt, it provides the ability to emit fire, although, as the scene shows, use of this flammable gift is severely limited.

“It’s the first time they actually cast me without needing to read or audition for the movie,” Kelly says in the video below. “This is the first time I didn’t ask any questions. [Shows layers of prosthetics and laughing] Wish I would have asked a question.”

As for how they got MGK to appear as though he’s burning up…

“This is particularly groundbreaking and a bit of an industry first,” says visual effects supervisor Ivan Moran, whose credits include Salt, The Legend of Tarzan and Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle. “It’s a programmable LED suit that’s actually embedded in full-screen prosthetics.”

The videos shows how MGK underwent five hours of make up every day and the layers – both digitally and prosthetic effects wise – that went into creating the various levels of heat and flame. Plus, how they crafted the scene’s explosive bathtub finale.

Take a look at the BTS featurette below and underneath it you can check out the scene itself. Project Power is streaming on Netflix now. Our review can be found HERE.

Official synopsis for Project Power:

On the streets of New Orleans, word begins to spread about a mysterious new pill that unlocks superpowers unique to each user. The catch: You don’t know what will happen until you take it. While some develop bulletproof skin, invisibility, and super strength, others exhibit a deadlier reaction. But when the pill escalates crime within the city to dangerous levels, a local cop (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) teams with a teenage dealer (Dominique Fishback) and a former soldier fueled by a secret vendetta (Jamie Foxx) to fight power with power and risk taking the pill in order to track down and stop the group responsible for creating it.
