Robert Redford has confirmed that he will be playing the head of S.H.I.E.L.D in Captain America 2.

The Academy Award winner told Spinoff:

“I wanted to do something just to be different. Something bold, different. And that felt like a good thing to do. That was it, nothing more to it than that. Well, it’s bold in terms of expectations, I guess. ”

Redford will be joining one hell of a cast: Chris Evans (Captain America/Steve Rogers), Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier), Toby Jones (Arnim Zola) and Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), along with Cobie Smulders (Maria Hill), Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Anthony Mackie (Sam Wilson/Falcon), Emily VanCamp (Sharon Carter), Frank Grillo (Crossbones) and Max Hernandez (Agent Jasper Sitwell).

The quick synopsis is as follows: As Steve Rogers continues his affiliation with S.H.I.E.L.D and struggles to embrace his role in the modern world, he’s reunited with James ‘Bucky’ Barnes, who is now a brainwashed Russian assassin known as the ‘Winter Soldier’.

Captain America 2 is being directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, two brothers that have worked primarily in television (Arrested Development, Community). It’s interesting that they’ve been given the reigns to such a big movie.

Redford is always good value and we’re sure that he’ll add even more class to the proceedings. He’s been picking up more and more work lately. He stars and directs the upcoming thriller The Company You Keep and he’ll be lost at sea in All Is Lost.

ETA: 4 April, 2014.
