The first official images have arrived for upcoming video game adaptation Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, which reboots the franchise and promises to be more in line with the video games.
As you can see above and below, the film will star Kaya Scodelario (Crawl) as Claire Redfield; Avan Jogia (Zombieland: Double Tap) as Leon S. Kennedy; Tom Hopper (The Umbrella Academy) as Albert Wesker; Chad Rook (Virgin River) as Richard Aiken; Hannah John-Kamen (Ant-Man and the Wasp) as Jill Valentine; Robbie Amell (Upload) as Chris Redfield; and Marina Mazepa (The Unholy) as Lisa Trevor, the once ordinary human girl who was transformed into a horrific mutant creature after years of constant viral experimentation by the Umbrella Corporation.
The Milla Jovovich-starring franchise may have its following, but fans of the games have long called for a more direct adaptation. This could (hopefully) be the one gamers have been waiting for. The film is directed and written by Johannes Roberts (47 Meters Down, The Strangers: Prey at Night), who told IGN earlier this year that they used the first game’s Spencer Mansion and the second game’s Raccoon Police Department. As for the tone, they’re drawing on the second game’s remake.
“[The remake of the second game] was a wonderful cinematic experience with the tone, the constant darkness, the rain, the look of the game and I just took that and said yes, this is the world I want to work in,” Roberts said. “We chose the tone for the remake of the second game and made it our model for this film.”
Fingers firmly crossed this one comes out well. Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, also starring Donal Logue as Chief Brian Irons and Neal McDonough as William Birkin, will be hitting US cinemas on November 24th and Australian cinemas on November 25th.
