Get ready for a Rick and Morty anime series!

Adult Swim has officially given the green light to Rick and Morty: The Anime, a new series that will depict Rick Sanchez and the Smiths  in anime form – and no, it’s not a multiverse adventure to enjoy a new animation style for a quick tangent. Adult Swim describes the 10-episode series as an original work that will stand on its own while adapting the themes and events of the main series.

The series will be coming from celebrated anime director Takashi Sano, who helmed 2020 anime series Tower of God and also directed two well-received Rick and Morty anime shorts: Rick and Morty vs. Genocider and Summer Meets God (Rick Meets Evil), both of which you can watch below.

“The multiverse-straddling exploits of Rick and the gang pose challenges to the family bond, but they always rise to the occasion,” said Sano, who’s also a Rick and Morty superfan. “It’s such a life-affirming sight, and Jerry is no exception.” He added, “I am honored to have been given an opportunity to tell a new story about this amazing family. I hope you enjoy their adventures!”

As with Sano’s Rick and Morty anime shorts, the new series is coming from Japanese animation studio Telecom Animation Film (Lupin the IIIrd Series, Shenmue the Animation, Tower of God).

Along with the announcement of Rick and Morty: The Anime, Adult Swim also revealed it had greenlit Ninja Kamui, an anime series directed by Sunghoo Park (God of High School, Jujutsu Kaisen) and featuring character designs by Takeshi Okazaki (Afro Samurai, Star Wars Visions, Batman: Ninja).

A futuristic action/adventure anime, Ninja Kamui will tell the story of a former ninja who, having escaped his clan, is hiding from his violent past in rural America with his family. One night, assassins from his former organisation turn up and exact bloody retribution for betraying their code. They should have made sure he was really gone. He rises from his seeming “death” and re-emerges as his former self, embarking on a path of vengeance that will pit him against trained assassins, combat cyborgs, and rival ninjas.

Both Rick and Morty: The Anime and Ninja Kamui are in production and will premiere on Adult Swim and HBO Max.
