Robert Downey Jr. could be playing Sherlock Holmes for the third time, and it could be happening very soon.
Downey has said that Sherlock Holmes 3 may very well start filming this year, revealing that he is in discussions with Sherlock Holmes and Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows director Guy Ritchie to team up again on for a third outing.
“We’re talking about it right now. NOW. I can’t wait,” Downey said in an interview with Shortlist.
“We can do some preliminary stuff. If we could shoot it on Skype, we could have it done in a week. I know Guy Ritchie loves me as much as I love him – and he damn well should. When we’re making those Sherlock movies it is off the hook. We’ll attempt to make one this year. It really is a big deal to go and do those movies. I’m tired all the time, but I’m excited about it.”
While the two previous Sherlock films received mixed reviews, general audiences lapped them up. The first Ritchie-Downey team-up earned $US524 million worldwide and the sequel, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, took in $US545 million.
With Downey still in demand and the character of Sherlock Holmes as popular as ever, as evidenced by the hugely successful Benedict Cumberbatch-starring BBC series, audiences will most likely once again flock to a third entry in the franchise.
No word as yet on whether or not Jude Law will return as Dr. John Watson.
