Robotech Movie Coming Soon from Sony

The anime series Robotech will be getting the big-screen treatment, with Sony Pictures moving on developing it into a potential film franchise.

Variety reports that Sony has picked up the rights to the franchise, placing the project on the fast track to a live-action feature.

The film, penned by 300 scribe Michael Gordon, will see Gianni Nunnari (From Dusk Till Dawn, 300, The Immortals) producing alongside Mark Canton (300, Escape Plan).

Sony’s said to be aiming big with this one, wanting to take advantage of its “Independence Day meets Star Wars vibe.”

Robotech tells of humanity using technology to take on extra terrestrials in interplanetary wars.

Robotech is unique in that it has always been a marriage of spectacle with human characters that seem drawn from life,” Variety quotes Columbia Pictures Production Chief Michael De Luca as saying.

“That’s why we are so excited to be working with Mark and Gianni as we move forward on this project. With a history that offers an epic love triangle, a renegade hero, and a world on the brink of extinction, Robotech offers a wide scope and a rich and impressive universe where the story possibilities are endless.”

The rights were originally at Warner Bros, where Tobey Maguire and Akiva Goldman had been attached as producers.
