Director Rupert Wyatt will no longer be at the helm of the upcoming Channing Tatum-starring Gambit movie.

According to Deadline, the Rise of the Planet of the Apes director has issued a statement citing scheduling issues as the reason for the exit, although there are rumours that Wyatt and the studio had disagreements regarding the script and budget.

“I was very much looking forward to working with my friend Channing and the team at Fox, but regrettably a push in the start date now conflicts with another project,” Wyatt said in his statement.

“I thank them for the opportunity, and I know that Gambit will make a terrific film.”

Gambit has taken a while to come to life. Tatum and producer Lauren Shuler Donner pushed to get the film into gear, finally confirming his casting back in May. Word of Wyatt’s hiring to direct came in June, and a month later whispers arose that Tatum was considering leaving the project. Those latter worries ended up being unfounded, but Wyatt’s exit still puts the project at the risk of yet another delay.

Gambit was initially meant to start production in November, but was then moved March.

Fox is going to have to move quickly in their search for a new director, especially if they plan to keep their current U.S. release date of October 7, 2016.
