HBO has released the teaser trailer for Scenes from a Marriage, an upcoming miniseries offering a contemporary reexamination of the 1973 Swedish miniseries of the same name by acclaimed writer-director Ingmar Bergman.
Oscar Isaac and Jessica Chastain, reuniting following their 2014 drama A Most Violent Year, play an American couple whose marriage begins to break down in a story that looks at love, hatred, desire, monogamy, marriage, and divorce. The supporting cast includes Nicole Beharie, Corey Stoll and Tovah Feldshuh.
This was both written and directed by Hagai Levi, the Israeli writer/producer/director whose credits include co-creating Showtime series The Affair and creating BeTipul, which was remade as HBO’s In Treatment (Levi also produced and co-directed the adaptation). Isaac and Chastain are among the executive producers; as is Michelle Williams, who was once attached to lead the series with Isaac before a scheduling conflict saw her exit and Chastain enter.
Those well aware of Bergman’s original miniseries and his acclaimed condensed theatrical version that followed in ’74 will have an idea of the potential gut-punch of a two-hander that could be on the way here. This first look certainly bodes well; fingers firmly crossed we’re in for something special. Scenes from a Marriage will premiere on HBO and HBO Max this coming September.
