Based on the 1973 Swedish mini-series of the same name from renowned filmmaker Ingmar Bergman, who condensed it to a theatrical version the following year, Scenes from a Marriage follows an American couple as they navigate the complexities of marriage.
Chastain plays Mira, a confident, ambitious tech executive who feels unfulfilled in her marriage. Isaac plays Jonathan, is a cerebral and accommodating philosophy professor desperate to keep their relationship intact. As per Foxtel’s synopsis, “Scenes from a Marriage mines the full complexity of Jonathan and Mira as individuals who ultimately know their marriage isn’t being torn apart by any one event or flaw, resulting in a radically honest series that allows the audience to eavesdrop on private conversations between two people torn between feelings of hate and love.”
The mini-series comes from Israeli writer/producer/director Hagai Levi, co-creator of Showtime series The Affair and creator of BeTipul, which was remade as HBO’s In Treatment. It certainly looks like a heavy look at a crumbling relationship, with two strong performers bringing it all to the table. Looking forward to being affected by this one.
Scenes from a Marriage, also starring Corey Stoll, Sunita Mani, Nicole Beharie and Tvah Feldshuh, will premiere on HBO and HBO Max in the US on September 12 and Foxtel in Australia on September 13. The series consists of five parts, with each part released weekly following the premiere.
