Days away from the highly anticipated release, an enticing clip has arrived for video game adaptation Mortal Kombat.
The sequence shown off below may only be just under 30 seconds in length, but it’s from an exciting moment: Scorpion (Hiroyuki Sanada, Westworld, The Wolverine) taking on Sub-Zero (Joe Taslim, The Raid, We Own the Night). Fans of the video games will appreciate the ice decoy move from the latter.
Mostly positive early reviews going up online. It’s still early and it’s changing rapidly, but at the time of writing, Mortal Kombat has 7.0 on IMDb with around 5,100 votes and a 67% on Rotten Tomatoes with 12 critic reviews.
Not long until the rest of us find out whether or not the new Mortal Kombat delivers the goods. The US-Australian co-production opens in Australian cinemas on April 22nd and hits both cinemas and HBO Max in the US on April 23rd.
Official synopsis for Mortal Kombat:
In “Mortal Kombat,” MMA fighter Cole Young, accustomed to taking a beating for money, is unaware of his heritage—or why Outworld’s Emperor Shang Tsung has sent his best warrior, Sub-Zero, an otherworldly Cryomancer, to hunt Cole down. Fearing for his family’s safety, Cole goes in search of Sonya Blade at the direction of Jax, a Special Forces Major who bears the same strange dragon marking Cole was born with. Soon, he finds himself at the temple of Lord Raiden, an Elder God and the protector of Earthrealm, who grants sanctuary to those who bear the mark. Here, Cole trains with experienced warriors Liu Kang, Kung Lao and rogue mercenary Kano, as he prepares to stand with Earth’s greatest champions against the enemies of Outworld in a high stakes battle for the universe. But will Cole be pushed hard enough to unlock his arcana—the immense power from within his soul—in time to save not only his family, but to stop Outworld once and for all?
