Secret in Their Eyes Trailer: Chiwetel Ejiofor, Nicole Kidman, Julia Roberts, Lead Remake

Juan José Campanella’s The Secret in Their Eyes was close to a masterpiece. A layered, thrilling, dramatic, and sprawling thriller; it wasn’t too much of a surprise when the film took home the 2010 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. It is then with great hesitation that we received the news the film would be receiving a remake. BUT, if you were to get a remake of a great film, you’d want to have some good talent on board.

Which brings us to Secret in Their Eyes, a remake led by Chiwetel Ejiofor, Nicole Kidman, and Julia Roberts.

Secret in Their Eyes tells of a team of FBI investigators who, along with their District Attorney supervisor, are torn apart when they find one of their own teenage daughters brutally murdered. Ray (Ejiofor) never loses hope of bringing the person responsible for justice and now, thirteen years later, he may be onto something.

The film is written and directed by Billy Ray, whose previous two films as director, Shattered Glass and Breach, were both solid, under-seen efforts. Ray’s screenwriting credits including State of Play, The Hunger Games, and Captain Phillips, the latter of which earned him an Oscar nomination.

Thankfully, the first trailer is solid. While there are some pretty big changes, there are still elements of Eduardo Sacheri’s novel kept, as are some of the original film’s big moments (it looks like they’re trying to recreate that spectacular stadium scene), but it’s ultimately the performances that look to be the key drawing card. The cast is no doubt solid, with Dean Norris and Michael Kelly adding some classy support, so here’s hoping the film brings some new oomph to warrant a rehash while keeping the emotional and thrilling elements of its source material.

Secret in Their Eyes will see a U.S. cinema release on October 22.

Official synopsis for Secret in Their Eyes:

A tight-knit team of rising FBI investigators – Ray (Chiwetel Ejiofor) and Jess (Julia Roberts), along with their District Attorney supervisor Claire (Nicole Kidman) – is suddenly torn apart when they discover that Jess’s teenage daughter has been brutally and inexplicably murdered.

Now, thirteen years later, after obsessively searching every day for the elusive killer, Ray finally uncovers a new lead that he’s certain can permanently resolve the case, nail the vicious murderer, and bring long-desired closure to his team. No one is prepared, however, for the shocking, unspeakable secret that will reveal the enduring, destructive effects of personal vengeance on the human soul.

Interweaving past and present, this deeply layered mystery explores the murky boundaries between justice and revenge, and asks the question: how far would you go to right an unfathomable wrong?
