Filming is currently in full swing on Universal’s reboot of The Mummy, and our first look at Sofia Boutella’s titular character has hit the net.
Alex Kurtzman (known for his writing work on the Transformers and Star Trek franchises) will be directing the new Mummy film, which will feature a cast led by Tom Cruise and Russell Crowe, the latter of which has been cast as Dr. Henry Jekyll.
The lead creature will be played by Boutella, who played the deadly Gazelle in Kingsman: The Secret Service. Set photos have been leaked online, revealing Boutella in character, an admittedly attractive twist on the classic Universal creature. Of course, it’s important to take in account that she’ll most likely be looking different in the film, especially after further touch ups/CG additions are made.
Universal’s logline for the film is as follows:
Though safely entombed in a crypt deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient queen whose destiny was unjustly taken from her is awakened in our current day, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia, and terrors that defy human comprehension.
This is set to be an important chapter in Universal’s interconnected monsters universe, which kicked off with Dracula Untold and will include The Wolf Man, The Invisible Man and Van Helsing. The Mummy, also starring Annabelle Wallis, Javier Botet, Jake Johnson and Courtney B. Vance, is scheduled for U.S. release on June 9, 2017.
