Simu Liu (Kim’s Convenience) takes on the title role, playing a skilled martial artist who finds himself drawn back to the clandestine Ten Rings organisation and forced to confront the past he thought he left behind. It’s a family matter, as the Ten Rings is run by his father, Wenwu (Tony Leung). As those familiar with the comics will know, Wenwu is also known as The Mandarin (we saw Ben Kingsley playing a faux Mandarin in Iron Man 2).
“What happened to your shirt?” Awkwafina’s Katy amusingly asks Shang-Chi in the trailer below. Add Liu to the roster of shredded Marvel heroes offering up shirtless moments, following in the footsteps of MCU stars Chris Evans, Chris Pratt, Paul Rudd, Chris Hemsworth, and Tom Holland, among others. Six-pack eye candy aside, it’s another high-energy, entertaining look at what will hopefully be a great expansion to this universe.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, also starring Michelle Yeoh, Fala Chen, Meng’er Zhang, Florian Munteanu and Ronny Chieng, will be in Australian cinemas on September 2nd and US cinemas on September 3rd.
