Shazam!, the next DC movie to be filmed, has cast its titular superhero.
Set to play the adult superhero that young Billy Batson transforms into after uttering the word “Shazam” is Zachary Levi, who many may know from his television work (Chuck, Heroes Reborn, Telenovela). THR broke the casting news, reporting that Levi beat out a number of other actors for the role, including wrestler turned film star John Cena.
“Honored and greatly humbled to be a part of the #dcuniverse by bringing the original Captain Marvel to life,” Levi posted on Instagram. “I am beside myself with gratitude, not only for this opportunity, but also the incredible outpouring of love and support from so many of you out there in the world. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’ll be in the gym for the rest of forever.”
Levi can now boast credits in both DC and Marvel universes. The actor also appears in Thor: The Dark World and Thor: Ragnarok as Asgardian warrior Fandral.
The high-profile picture is being directed by David F. Sandberg, who has delivered two consecutive horror hits for New Line. Made for $US4.9 million, 2016’s Lights Out raked in $US148.8 million worldwide. Sandberg followed it up this year with the sequel Annabelle: Creation, which earned an impressive $US303.2 million from a $US15 million budget.
Dwayne Johnson is playing Shazam villain Black Adam in a picture of the same name that is also currently in development.
Shazam!, which is coming to life with a screenplay by Henry Gayden (Earth to Echo) and Darren Lemke (Goosebumps, Jack the Giant Slayer), will start filming in Toronto, Canada in February.
