BBC has unveiled the first trailer for Sherlock‘s fourth season, and it looks like we’re in for a doozy of a chapter.

The trailer offers a surprisingly serious look at the next season, complete with a visibly shaken Sherlock (Benedict Cumberbatch), an angry Mrs. Hudson (Una Stubbs), and, of course, an appearance by Andrew Scott’s Jim Moriarty. The plot details are kept appropriately under wraps, but it appears Sherlock’s past will have an important part to play in the narrative, as will Toby Jones’ mysterious new villain.

Sherlock season 4 follows on from The Abominable Bride, the Christmas Special released last year that, in this writer’s opinion, didn’t really set up what was to come in a satisfactory manner, leading us on a silly journey into Sherlock’s psyche. It should have been great; it ended up being disappointingly mediocre. That being said, the trailer below is both action-packed and deeply intriguing, and bodes well for the next season. Count us in.

Sherlock‘s fourth season is expected to premiere on U.K.’s BBC on New Year’s Day.
