New ‘Skyscraper’ Trailer Has Dwayne Johnson Going Full ‘Die Hard’

Universal Pictures

Universal has dropped a new trailer for Dwayne Johnson‘s upcoming action film, Skyscraper.

The hard-working wrestler turned international superstar recently fought giant monsters in Rampage, and now he’s taking on good ol’ fashion baddies holding his family hostage in Skyscraper, a high-concept actioner gleefully carrying its Die Hard influence on its sleeve.

The film finds Johnson playing Will Sawyer, a former FBI Hostage Rescue Team leader and U.S. war veteran who now works as a skyscraper security assessor. During an assignment in Hong Kong, working on the tallest building in the world, his family is suddenly taken hostage and he finds himself framed for a giant fire. Yep, time for some ass kickin’.

Johnson reunites with Central Intelligence director Rawson Marshall Thurber, who has also written the film’s screenplay. All signs point to a highly calculated film, giving Johnson a straightforward action vehicle to do his thing and Hong Kong targeted to clearly get that China money (China has given Rampage, for example, $US155 million of its total $US407 million box office draw so far). Hopefully we’re in for a fun time.

Skyscraper, also starring Neve Campbell, Chin Han, Noah Taylor, Roland Møller, Byron Mann, Pablo Schreiber and Hannah Quinlivan, arrives in Australia on July 12 and hits the U.S. on July 13.

Official synopsis for Skyscraper:

Global icon Dwayne Johnson leads the cast of Legendary’s Skyscraper as former FBI Hostage Rescue Team leader and U.S. war veteran Will Sawyer, who now assesses security for skyscrapers. On assignment in China he finds the tallest, safest building in the world suddenly ablaze, and he’s been framed for it. A wanted man on the run, Will must find those responsible, clear his name and somehow rescue his family who is trapped inside the building…above the fire line.
