IFC Films has dropped the first trailer for Sleeping with Other People, an upcoming romantic comedy starring Jason Sudeikis and Alison Brie.
The films tells the story of two serial cheaters who slept together in college. They meet again by chance twelve years later at a sex addicts meeting. They become good friends, but their mutual attraction and the temptation of sex threatens to ruin what they have. A platonic relationship is in order.
Early reviews have been pretty decent for this one, throwing kudos its way for bringing a nice balance of heart and humour. The first trailer keeps it nice and safe, keeping the rom-com tropes on display while hinting at some more underlying themes. It looks like an amiable outing, and we’re happy to see Brie in a larger big-screen role, but it does feel like we’ve done the ‘let’s not have sex and ruin this friendship’ thing one too many times before.
Written and directed by Leslye Headland, who previously brought us Bachelorette.
Sleeping with Other People, also starring Amanda Peet, Adam Scott, Natasha Lyonne, and Jason Mantzoukas, hits the U.S. on September 11.
Official synopsis for Sleeping with Other People:
Can two serial cheaters get a second chance at love? After a one-night stand in college, New Yorkers Lainey (Alison Brie) and Jake (Jason Sudeikis) meet by chance twelve years later and discover they each have the same problem: because of their monogamy-challenged ways, neither can maintain a relationship. Determined to stay friends despite their mutual attraction, they make a pact to keep it platonic, a deal that proves easier said than done. Fresh, funny, and full of witty insights about modern love, this hilariously heartfelt film “is the rare rom-com that reminds us why we love them so much in the first place” (Time Out New York). Amanda Peet, Adam Scott, Natasha Lyonne, and Jason Mantzoukas co-star.
