New ‘Snake Eyes’ Trailer & Featurette Unveil More of the ‘G.I. Joe Origins’ Movie

Paramount Pictures

The full-length official trailer has been released for Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins, the upcoming action film starring Henry Golding (Crazy Rich Asians, Last Christmas) as the G.I. Joe character. Paramount also unveiled a featurette that focuses on the relationship between Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow, the latter played by Warrior star Andrew Koji.

The plot tells of how Snake Eyes’ life takes quite the turn when he is welcomed into an ancient Japanese clan called the Arashikage after saving the life of their heir apparent. He begins a new life in Japan, learning the ways of the ninja warrior from the clan. But when his past secrets are unveiled, he finds his honour and allegiance being tested.

The featurette takes a look Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow’s relationship, which has seen both camaraderie and all-out collision in the comics and animated series. The film’s take on their early relationship was given “the stamp of approval” by Larry Hama, the comic-book writer who penned most of the G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero Marvel Comics series.

“It was so important for us to get that relationship right in this movie,” says Goulding. “Larry gave us creative license to be able to tell a story beyond the comics and launch this brand new universe for G.I. Joe.”

Indeed, if Snake Eyes does well enough, Paramount will almost certainly move forward with a new cinematic universe, expanding this world and bringing in more of the many characters in the G.I. Joe line-up. We’ll see.

Robert Schwentke (FlightplanThe Time Traveler’s WifeRED) directs the film from a screenplay by Evan Spiliotopoulos (2014’s Hercules, 2017’s Beauty and the Beast).

Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins, also starring Aussie actress Samara Weaving as Scarlett, The Raid’s Iko Uwais as Hard Master, Úrsula Corberó as Baroness, Haruka Abe as Akiko, Takehiro Hira as Kenta, and Peter Mensah as Blind Master, will be in Australian cinemas on July 22nd and US cinemas on July 23rd.
