Take a look at the very first trailer released for Song to Song, the next picture from filmmaker Terrence Malick (The Thin Red Line, The Tree of Life).
Starring Michael Fassbender, Ryan Gosling, Rooney Mara and Natalie Portman, the drama is set in “a rock ‘n’ roll landscape of seduction and betrayal” and follows two entangled couples.
There’s no hiding the fact that this is a Malick film; that lens, the swaying camera, characters just… being, it’s all here. While it’s been sometime since Malick reached the heights he demonstrated in the likes of The Tree of Life, it’s good to see him working more consistently. There’s a damn good cast, three-time Oscar-winning cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki (Children of Men, Gravity, Birdman, The Revenant) behind the camera, and a music scene that could stand as a nice point of difference in Malick’s resume. Fingers crossed.
It’ll be interesting to see who else appears here, too, since Malick’s films often evolve in production and then change again during the edit. The film also stars Cate Blanchett, Trevante Rhodes, Christian Bale, Haley Bennett, Benicio Del Toro, Boyd Holbrook, Val Kilmer and Clifton Collins Jr., with appearances by musicians Patti Smith, Lykke Li, the Black Lips, Iggy Pop, Florence and the Machine and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Song to Song will open in limited release in the US on March 17. No Australian release date has yet been announced.
