Idris Elba has joined the cast of upcoming sequel Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
The actor will be voicing the character of Knuckles the Echidna, one of the primary characters from the world of Sonic. In the Sonic games, the anthropomorphic echidna’s dominant traits are his powerful spike-like knuckles (hence, his name) and his strength. The hot-headed character is also guardian of a powerful ancient relic named the Master Emerald.
Elba joins a cast that includes Ben Schwartz, back as the voice of Sonic; James Marsden, back as Sonic’s human buddy, Tom; Jim Carrey, back as the villainous Dr. Ivo Robotnik; and Tika Sumpter, back as Tom’s wife, Maddie. Natasha Rothwell, Adam Pally, and Shemar Moore also star.
As was revealed in a mid-credit sequence at the end of the first film, the sequel will include Miles “Tails” Prower, a yellow-orange fox character that serves as Sonic’s sidekick. While Colleen O’Shaughnessy voiced Tails in that scene, there’s still official word on whether or not O’Shaughnessy will return to voice the character in the sequel.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 will bring back the first film’s key creative team, including director Jeff Fowler and screenwriters Pat Casey and Josh Miller.
The Sonic film was a pleasant surprise. After initial backlash received due to Sonic’s awkward look, the team smartly redesign their rendition and the film proved to be a hit. The family adventure was met with mostly warm reviews and made $US319 million worldwide from a budget of around $US85 million.
Assuming the pandemic allows it, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 will be released in Australian cinemas on April 7 and US cinemas on April 8, 2022.
