Sony Pictures Animation Announces Medusa Feature

Sony Pictures Animation have announced that they have acquired an animated comedy feature pitch entitled Medusa, which tells an all-new story behind the infamous snake-headed lady from Greek mythology. The animated feature film is to be directed by Lauren Faust, who has worked as a writer and supervising director on The Powerpuff Girls and who successfully rebooted the My Little Pony franchise with My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.

The pitch came from Todd Alcott, who co-wrote DreamWorks’ Antz, and Holly Golden, whose background lies in reality television.

Director Lauren Faust described the reimagining that we’ll be seeing in Medusa, saying, “In our story, we meet Medusa as a young human, who, like so many of us, is overwhelmed with trying to fit a certain mold to please others. Her resulting popularity ticks off the wrong Goddess who turns her into the snake-haired monster we all know and fear. Medusa sets out on a quest to reverse this curse with the help of a goofy team of oddball and misfit mythological creatures who help her learn that what makes you different is, in fact, what makes you strong.”

No surprise that this version will not be similar to that from Roman poet Ovid, which describes Medusa as a beautiful maiden who was raped by Poseidon in Athena’s temple, thus enraging Athena to the point that she transformed Medusa’s beautiful hair to serpents and made her face so terrible to behold that the mere sight of it would turn onlookers to stone.

Production on Medusa is set to be supervised by Sony Pictures Animation president of production Michelle Raimo Kouyate.
