Spidey & Gwen Head Into the Multiverse in First Look at ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’

Sony Pictures Releasing

Sony has unveiled our first look at Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, the upcoming sequel to 2018 animated Oscar winner Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.

First unveiled at Brazil Comic-Con, the two-and-half-minute video not only unveils a surprisingly lengthy sequence for a film that isn’t scheduled to hit cinemas for almost another year, but also comes with confirmation that this film is one of TWO. The full title: Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse – Part One.

The scene finds Miles Morales (Shameik Moore, returning to voice) chilling out in his Brooklyn bedroom, apparently still very much digging Post Malone. A portal then opens above him, bringing in none other than Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld, who is just everywhere at the moment). “Wanna get out of here?” Gwen asks him. As for why and where exactly, it isn’t made clear. And then, boom, multi-verse craziness.

The voice cast includes Oscar Isaac as Miguel O’Hara, aka Spider-Man 2099 – an alternate Spidey from the future; Jake Johnson, back as Peter B. Parker, who we met as a disheveled Spidey in the first film; and Issa Rae as Jessica Drew, aka Spider-Woman.

Interestingly, the sequel brings in three different directors from the first film. At the helm this time are Joaquim Dos Santos (Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Legend of Korra), Kemp Powers (co-director of Disney•Pixar Oscar-winner Soul), and Justin K. Thompson (a production designer on Into the Spider-Verse). The screenplay comes from 21 Jump Street and The Lego Movie filmmakers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, along with Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings scribe David Callaham. Lord and Miller also return as producers.

The first film boasted stunning animation, high energy, a great sense of humour, and a lot of heart (you can check out my complete review of the film RIGHT HERE); fingers crossed the follow-up follows suit. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is scheduled to hit U.S. and Australian cinemas in October 2022.

Official synopsis for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse:

Miles Morales returns for the next chapter of the Oscar®-winning Spider-Verse saga, an epic adventure that will transport Brooklyn’s full-time, friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man across the Multiverse to join forces with Gwen Stacy and a new team of Spider-People to face off with a villain more powerful than anything they have ever encountered.
