The 1984 fantasy-comedy Splash is set to receive a gender-swapping remake.
The original film starred Tom Hanks as a man who encounters a mermaid (Daryl Hannah) that saved him as a child. He is given the option to stay on land or live under the sea with her. Well, Channing Tatum will be playing be playing the mer…man this time around and Jillian Bell will be playing the land-dwelling character.
As per THR, the screenplay will come from Marja-Lewis Ryan, whose previous feature credit is the indie comedy The Four-Faced Liar, but who has a number of projects in the pipeline. Ryan has also penned Tristar’s upcoming adaptation of Sheryl Sandberg’s bestselling book Lean In, as well as 6 Balloons, a Netflix film she will also produce and direct.
There’s no word as to who will be directing the picture, or whether the film’s narrative will be a close retread of the original.
The original’s director, Ron Howard, and producer, Brian Grazer, will both be producing the film alongside Tatum, Reid Carolin and Peter Kieren.
This marks yet another project with Tatum and Bell. The two have previously appeared together in 22 Jump Street and Bell’s Comedy Central series Idiotsitter.
