Star Wars Han Solo Spinoff to be Directed by Christopher Miller & Phil Lord

Christopher Miller and Phil Lord, the duo that brought us The Lego Movie and both 21 Jump Street movies, are to direct a Star Wars anthology picture focusing on none other than Han Solo himself.

THR initially broke the news, reporting that their next directing project will tell of a young Han Solo and will come with a screenplay by Lawrence Kasdan (Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens) and Jon Kasdan (In the Land of Women, The First Time).

Miller & Lord are understandably excited. Their official statement:

This is the first film we’ve worked on that seems like a good idea to begin with. We promise to take risks, to give the audience a fresh experience, and we pledge ourselves to be faithful stewards of these characters who mean so much to us. This is a dream come true for us. And not the kind of dream where you’re late for work and all your clothes are made of pudding, but the kind of dream where you get to make a film with some of the greatest characters ever, in a film franchise you’ve loved since before you can remember having dreams at all.”

THR points out this isn’t the film that was originally to be helmed by Josh Trank, who split with the project a couple of months ago. That picture is rumoured to focus on Boba Fett’s origins story.

Miller & Lord have been on everyone’s most-wanted lists following their non-stop hit-fest that began unfolding with 2009’s Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. They’ll be writing and producing the sequel to The Lego Movie, which will see director Rob Schrab (Community) take the helm; were circling a Flash film for Warner Bros., but that’s probably not going to be happening now that Star Wars has taken over their schedules; and were attached to pen an animated Spider-Man film for Sony, which, since it’s not necessarily a mammoth task, may very well still happen.

The Star Wars universe will be getting a massive expansion over the next few years. The Miller & Lord Han Solo picture is set for a U.S. release on May 25, 2018, and will follow J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens (hitting the U.S. on December 18, 2015), Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: Episode VIII (hitting the U.S. on May 26, 2017) and Gareth Edwards’ Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One (hitting the U.S. on December 16, 2016).

The question now: Who’s going to be cast as the young Han Solo?
