The Hollywood Reporter has announced that Michael Keaton, Emma Stone, Naomi Watts and Zach Galifianakis will star in Birdman, a new comedy to be directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu (Amores Perros, 21 Grams, Babel, Biutiful) .
Birdman will tell the story of a former actor (Michael Keaton) who attempts to reclaim his past glory by starring in a Broadway play based on a Raymond Carver short story.
Emma Stone will play Keaton’s daughter, fresh out of rehab and now his assistant. Naomi Watts is to star as an actress on the Broadway play and Zach Galifianakis will play a conniving producer.
It’s going to be interesting to see how Iñárritu tackles the comedy genre, especially since his films are usually quite dark and emotional. It’s also going to be good to see Michael Keaton back in a lead role after so long.
Update: According to Deadline, Edward Norton is now set to play the male lead in the Broadway play. This “egotistical lead stage actor” will derail Keaton’s plan to make it back to the top.
