Take a look at the trailer for Submergence, a romantic-drama-thriller starring James McAvoy and Alicia Vikander.
Directed by three-time Oscar-nominated German filmmaker Wim Wenders (Wings of Desire, Paris, Texas, Faraway, So Close!), Submergence tells of a deeply-in-love couple that that are seperated on their respective dangerours missions: he (McAvoy) is a British Secret Service agent who is taken hostage by Jihadist fighters and she (Vikander) is a bio-mathematician on a deep sea diving project.
The trailer’s a little awkward, providing what looks like a mash-up of two movies, each with a different tone. Nevertheless, there’s a good amount of talent here, including the two reliable leads and good-looking cinematography from experimental D.O.P. Benoît Debie (Enter the Void, Love, Irreversible, Spring Breakers). Wenders’ last solid film was – arguably – Lisbon Story, and that was way back in ’94. Hopefully this finds the once-hailed filmmaker back in fine form.
Submergence, also starring Alexander Siddig, opens in the U.S. on April 13 and hits the U.K. on May 18.
Official synopsis for Submergence:
Submergence is a love story that takes us into the extremely different worlds of our two protagonists, Danielle Flinders (Alicia Vikander) and James More (James McAvoy). They meet by chance in a remote hotel in Normandy where they both prepare for a dangerous mission. They fall in love almost against their will, but soon recognize in each other the love of their lives. When they have to separate, we find out that James works for the British Secret Service. He’s involved in a mission in Somalia to track down a source for suicide bombers infiltrating Europe. Danielle ‘Danny’ Flinders is a bio-mathematician working on a deep sea diving project to support her theory about the origin of life on our planet. Soon, they are worlds apart. James is taken hostage by Jihadist fighters and has no way of contacting Danny, and she has to go down to the bottom of the ocean in her submersible, not even knowing if James is still alive…
