After a lengthy search, Warner Bros. has chosen a director for Suicide Squad 2.

Gavin O’Connor, known for Warrior and The Accountant, will be at the helm of the sequel. Deadline reports that the decision came after the studio responded positively to O’Connor’s pitch of the film, which he’ll now be writing alongside his writing collaborator Anthony Tambakis (Warrior, Jane Got a Gun).

O’Connor’s signature on that dotted line will bring to a close a search that has seen a variety of potential directors named, including Mel Gibson and Orphan and The Shallows filmmaker Jaume Collet-Serra, the latter of whom had to pass on the project to direct the Dwayne Johnson-starring Jungle Cruise movie for Disney. David Ayer, writer and director of the first film, is moving on to craft the spinoff Gotham City Sirens, which will focus on a number of female DC characters including Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn.

The pressure’s on for O’Connor. While Suicide Squad did well financially, pulling in $US745.6 million in worldwide box office receipts from a production budget of $US175 million, fanboys and critics generally weren’t impressed. The film settled on a 25% score on review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes.

Apart from this DCEU sequel, O’Connnor is also crafting a sequel to The Accountant for Warner Bros. Ben Affleck will be reprising his role as ass-kicking math savant Christian Wolff.

Suicide Squad 2 is one of many DC features WB has in the works. Among others, we also have Wonder Woman 2, a Batgirl movie directed by Avengers helmer Joss Whedon, a Harley Quinn and Joker movie directed by Focus helmers John Requa and Glenn Ficarra, and a solo Joker movie directed by The Hangover helmer Todd Phillips. For the latter, by the way, Warner Bros. is reportedly eyeing Leonardo DiCaprio to star.
