Universal has dropped the first trailer for The Beguiled, a period drama-thriller directed by Sofia Coppola (The Virgin Suicides, Lost in Translation, Marie Antoinette).
Featuring a cast that includes Colin Farrell, Nicole Kidman, Kirsten Dunst and Elle Fanning, The Beguiled tells the story of an injured Union soldier who cons his way into each of the lonely women’s hearts at the Confederate girls’ boarding school helping him recover. They begin to turn on each other, and eventually, they turn on him.
Coppola has also penned this gothic melodrama, an adaptation of Thomas Cullinan’s novel of the same name. Clint Eastwood led an adaptation in 1971.
“The main crux of the story is about the dynamics between a group of women all stuck together, and then also the power shifts between men and women,” Copolla told EW. “So for me, it’s very universal, but it’s in this exotic setting of the Southern gentility.”
A good writer-director, a great cast and a moody little premise? Yep, we’re in.
The Beguiled, also starring Emma Howard, Oona Laurence, Angourie Rice and Addison Riecke, will open in the US on June 23. No Australian release date has been locked in as yet.
