Meet Soldier Boy!: Jensen Ackles Unveils First Pics as ‘The Boys’ Season 3 Superhero

Supernatural star Jensen Ackles is joining the cast of The Boys season 3 – and here’s your first look at the superhero he’ll be playing.

Ackles hit social media with a first look at himself in full superhero gear. “My idea of a camouflage banana hammock got overruled,” Ackles joked in his post. “And I’m glad it did. I love this suit.”

On Instagram, The Boys star Jack Quaid (Hughie) responded with four applause emojis. “Yeah baby!!! Get some!!” posted Ackles’ Supernatural co-star Jared Padalecki. “Yessirrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!” wrote fellow superhero, Shazam star Zachary Levi. And Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who played father to Ackles and Padalecki in Supernatural, had his own excited response: “OHHHHHHHHHHH SSSHHHIIIIIIITTTTTTTTTT!!!! I’m not sure I could be happier!! I FUCKIN LOVE SOLDIER BOY!!”

In The Boys comics, created by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, Soldier Boy is considered to be the original superhero. Soldier Boy – essentially a parody of Marvel’s Captain America – was among the first to be injected with Compound V and was sent into WWII to kill German soldiers. The comic book character’s powers include superhuman strength, superhuman speed, expert use of his powerful shield, and hand-to-hand combat, although he’s not on the same level of Homelander.

In the show, however, series creator Eric Kripke has said that the screen iteration will offer us a Soldier Boy that will be much more on Homelander’s level. He told Variety in 2020:

“As we’re writing him in this, we’re getting to really talk about the history of Vought because he’s like John Wayne: He’s one of these guys that’s been around for decades of Vought history. And he was Homelander before Homelander, so he’s from a different era, but he’s got the ego and the ambition — it just comes across in a different way because he’s from a different time.”

As you can see from Ackles’ look above and the character’s comic book rendition below, there’s quite the difference.

In a new statement, Kripke had the following to say:

“When I cast Jensen as Soldier Boy, the first thing I said was, ‘I’m most excited for you, because of the amazing process you’ll go through with LJ, our Super Suit designer.’ It took six months but the experience surpassed Jensen’s expectations,” he said. “LJ has made a work of art that tips its hat to the WWII Soldier Boy from the comics, while taking it in a sleek new direction. And if you think the photos are cool, just wait till you see Jensen in action. It’s one of my very favourite suits.”

Said The Boys costume designer Laura Jean Shannon, who co-created Soldier Boy’s screen suit with concept artist Greg Hopwood:

“Soldier Boy is the original badass. Our goal was to highlight a bygone era of overt masculinity and grit. With that pedigree we dove headfirst into baking in an all-American quality grounded in a military soldier’s practicality with a heavy dose of old school cowboy swagger. We knew that the actor had to have Steve McQueen looks and chops with a John Wayne attitude, luckily Jensen Ackles embodies all of that.”

No release date as of yet for The Boys season 3, which is currently in production.
