The trailer has been released for The Courier, an upcoming true-life spy thriller led by Benedict Cumberbatch.
The film has Cumberbatch playing British businessman Greville Wynne, who found himself in way over his head after being recruited by MI-6 and the CIA for a covert mission involving the Soviet Union. Tasked with gathering crucial intelligence needed to prevent a nuclear confrontation and defuse the Cuban Missile Crisis, he forms a dangerous partnership with Soviet officer Oleg Penkovsky (Merab Ninidze).
The is the second feature film for director Dominic Cooke, who previously helmed Saoirse Ronan-starring drama On Chesil Beach and three episodes of Shakespeare mini-series adaptation The Hollow Crown. The film has been met with mostly good reviews thus far, with many critics agreeing that Cumberbatch, unsurprisingly, delivers a strong performance. The trailer suggest a familiar type of cold war drama/thriller, but a solid one at that. Count me in.
The Courier, also starring Rachel Brosnahan and Jessie Buckley, will open in US cinemas on March 19th and Australian & New Zealand cinemas on April 1st.
