New ‘The First’ Trailer Unveils More of the Sean Penn Astronaut Series

Being an astronaut and preparing for a trip to Mars is a serious downer.

That, at least from the new trailer released for upcoming Hulu series The First, led by two-time Oscar winner Sean Penn. The drama series follows a crew of astronauts and their ups and down – but mostly downs – as they attempt to be the first humans to reach Mars.

House of Cards creator Beau Willimon is behind this potentially very good series, which boasts an intriguing narrative and direction from Daniel Sackheim (Game of Thrones, The Leftovers), Deniz Gamze Ergüven (Mustang), and Agnieszka Holland (Europa Europa, The Wire, House of Cards). This trailer and the teaser trailer before it don’t quite seem to show off the appeal that having a Mars trip in the narrative could offer, but perhaps they’re keeping the space element close to their chests. Either way, hopefully the drama on the ground engages and hits hard.

The First will be hitting Hulu on September 14.
