Briarcliff Entertainment

The trailer has arrived for the latest film in the genre that is ‘Liam Neeson kicking ass’.

The Marksman has Neeson playing Jim, a lone Arizona rancher whose world is turned upside down after a run-in with a drug cartel at the border. Following a shoot-out, Jim finds himself tasked with protecting an 11-year-old Mexican boy. Lucky for the boy and unlucky for the cartel, Jim has a particular set of skills that comes with being a former Marine sharpshooter.

It looks about as expected: an ultra-familiar thriller with Neeson doing his thing. If you’re a fan of the formula, this should be a comfy watch. The trailer does offer up a bit too much, as does the synopsis below, but who’s really expecting big surprises here.

This is the second feature for director Robert Lorenze, a longtime producer of Clint Eastwood films and director of Eastwood-starrer Trouble with the Curve. The cast includes Katheryn Winnick, Juan Pablo, and Teresa Ruiz, among others.

The Marksman will be hitting Australian cinemas on January 21st and US cinemas on January 22nd.

Official synopsis for The Marksman:

Hardened Arizona rancher Jim Hanson (Liam Neeson) simply wants to be left alone as he fends off eviction notices and tries to make a living on an isolated stretch of borderland. But everything changes when Hanson, an ex-Marine sharpshooter, witnesses 11-year-old migrant Miguel (Jacob Perez) fleeing with his mother Rosa (Teresa Ruiz) from drug cartel assassins led by the ruthless Mauricio (Juan Pablo Raba). After being caught in a shoot-out, a dying Rosa begs Jim to take her son to safety to her family in Chicago. Defying his cop daughter Sarah (Katheryn Winnick), Jim sneaks Miguel out of the local U.S. Customs and Border Patrol station and together, they hit the road with the group of killers in pursuit. Jim and Miguel slowly begin to overcome their differences and begin to forge an unlikely friendship, while Mauricio and his fellow assassins blaze a cold-blooded trail, hot on their heels. When they finally meet on a Midwestern farm, a fight to the death ensues as Jim uses his military skills and code of honor to defend the boy he’s come to love.
