‘The Meg’ Trailer: Jason Statham vs a Gigantic Shark

Jason Statham vs. massive prehistoric shark? Yeah, count us in.

The first trailer has arrived for The Meg, which finds Statham playing an expert deep-sea rescue diver who is recruited to save the crew of a submarine and, well, the world from a 75-foot-long shark known as the Megalodon. And as the official synopsis below reveals: he and this prehistoric creature have history.

With the likes of Kong: Skull Island, Pacific Rim: Uprising and Dwayne Johnson’s upcoming Rampage hitting big screens, it’s clear that giant creature features have been enjoying a bit of a resurgence in cinema. We head to the waters in The Meg, which looks undeniably silly, but that doesn’t mean for one second that it doesn’t have the potential to be a tonne of fun. The first trailer below offers up a self-aware sense of humour, while introducing a diverse cast (with a target on that China box office) and smartly keeping most of its set pieces under wraps.

An adaptation of Steve Alten’s sci-fi novel Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror was originally set up at Disney in 1997. The project failed to get off the ground for years until it moved to Warner Bros., where horror director Eli Roth (Hostel, Cabin Fever) entered talks in 2015. Roth soon fell off, allowing director Jon Turteltaub, whose credits include Cool Runnings, National Treasure and The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, to take the helm.

The Meg, also starring Rainn Wilson, Ruby Rose, Cliff Curtis, Winston Chao, Page Kennedy and Jessica McNamee, among others, will swim into U.S. cinemas on August 10 and chomps Down Under on August 30.

Official synopsis for The Meg:

A deep-sea submersible—part of an international undersea observation program—has been attacked by a massive creature, previously thought to be extinct, and now lies disabled at the bottom of the deepest trench in the Pacific…with its crew trapped inside. With time running out, expert deep sea rescue diver Jonas Taylor is recruited by a visionary Chinese oceanographer, against the wishes of his daughter Suyin, to save the crew—and the ocean itself—from this unstoppable threat: a pre-historic 75-foot-long shark known as the Megalodon. What no one could have imagined is that, years before, Taylor had encountered this same terrifying creature. Now, teamed with Suyin, he must confront his fears and risk his own life to save everyone trapped below…bringing him face to face once more with the greatest and largest predator of all time.
