This marks the third feature from Robert Eggers, who previously delivered two striking films with 2015 horror The Witch and 2019 artistic horror-fantasy The Lighthouse. The writer-director tackles his next tale on a much bigger scale with The Northman, an epic that finds Skarsgård playing a Viking prince on a quest to avenge the murder of this father (Hawke), who was killed at the hands of the ruthless Fjölnir (Claes Bang).
Eggers could have himself a hit with this brutal and visually impressive-looking picture. It also boasts a great cast. He reunites with The Witch and The Lighthouse cinematographer Jarin Blaschke here and has co-written the screenplay with acclaimed author Sjón Sjón (The Blue Fox, Dancer in the Dark).
Also starring Gustav Lindh and Björk, among others, The Northman is scheduled to open in Australian cinemas on April 21st and U.S. cinemas on April 22nd, 2022.
