‘The Old Guard’ Trailer: Charlize Theron is an Immortal Warrior in Netflix Comic Book Movie

Geez, Netflix. Give us a moment to breathe, will you?

The streaming giant has released the official trailer for The Old Guard, an action-fantasy movie led by Oscar winner Charlize Theron. The film, based on the comic of the same name by Leandro Fernandez and Greg Rucka, follows a covert team of immortal badasses that have long, long fought baddies. When they are suddenly exposed, they must fight to keep their identity a secret just as an unexpected new member is discovered.

The trailer makes it look decent enough, with a reliable cast and some entertaining-looking sequences. That being said, it all seems quite familiar, perhaps overly so; hopefully the fantasy elements are strong and the action well crafted enough to give this thing its own mark. Still, I’m always keen to see Theron kicking ass.

This is a change of pace for director Gina Prince-Bythewood, whose previous credits include Love & Basketball, Beyond the Lights and The Secret Life of Bees. Rucka, co-creator of the comic, penned the screenplay.

The Old Guard, also starring KiKi Layne, Marwan Kenzari, Matthias Schoenaerts, and Chiwetel Ejiofor, will be hitting Netflix on July 10.

Official synopsis for The Old Guard:

Led by a warrior named Andy (Charlize Theron), a covert group of tight-knit mercenaries with a mysterious inability to die have fought to protect the mortal world for centuries. But when the team is recruited to take on an emergency mission and their extraordinary abilities are suddenly exposed, it’s up to Andy and Nile (KiKi Layne), the newest soldier to join their ranks, to help the group eliminate the threat of those who seek to replicate and monetize their power by any means necessary. Based on the acclaimed graphic novel by Greg Rucka and directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood (LOVE & BASKETBALL, BEYOND THE LIGHTS), THE OLD GUARD is a gritty, grounded, action-packed story that shows living forever is harder than it looks.
