Benedict Cumberbatch, Kirsten Dunst and more star in The Power of the Dog, the first film in around 12 years from Oscar-winning New Zealand filmmaker Jane Campion (The Piano, Bright Star).

The official teaser has arrived for the upcoming Netflix drama, based on the 1967 novel of the same name by author Thomas Savage. Campion wrote the adapted screenplay, telling the story of a charismatic and brutal rancher (Cumberbatch), who inspires fear and awe in those around him. When his brother (Jesse Plemons) brings home a new wife and her son, Phil torments them until he finds himself exposed to the possibility of love.

There’s the potential for a very powerful picture here, with a rock-solid cast and, according to the praise directed at the book, what could be quite the tense, character-driven drama. Sign me up.

The Power of the Dog, also starring Kodi Smit-McPhee, Thomasin McKenzie, Genevieve Lemon, Keith Carradine, and Frances Conroy, will be streaming on Netflix from December 1st. The film opens in select US cinemas the same day.
