Watch a Clip from Guillermo del Toro’s ‘The Shape of Water’

Fox Searchlight has dropped the first clip from Guillermo del Toro’s next outing, the romantic fantasy The Shape of Water.

The latest film from the director of Pan’s Labyrinth, Hellboy and Pacific Rim tells of a mute woman, Eliza Esposito (Sally Hawkins), who falls in love with an “Amphibian Man” (Doug Jones) being held in a government laboratory.

The scene below finds the creature, credited as simply ‘The Asset’, being brought into the lab by Michael Shannon’s Strickland, the villain of the film. It also offers up what is likely Eliza’s first encounter with The Asset.

The hype has been steadily growing for this one. del Toro’s strong fanbase will always ensure there’s some buzz, of course, but it’s the early rave reviews that have come from the film’s Venice Film Festival premiere that really add to the anticipation. The Shape of Water, also starring Michael Stuhlbarg, Octavia Spencer and Richard Jenkins, will open in the U.S. on December 8 and arrives in Australian cinemas on January 25, 2018.

Official synopsis for The Shape of Water:

From master story teller, Guillermo del Toro, comes THE SHAPE OF WATER – an other-worldly fairy tale, set against the backdrop of Cold War era America circa 1962. In the hidden high-security government laboratory where she works, lonely Elisa (Sally Hawkins) is trapped in a life of isolation. Elisa’s life is changed forever when she and co-worker Zelda (Octavia Spencer) discover a secret classified experiment. Rounding out the cast are Michael Shannon, Richard Jenkins, Michael Stuhlbarg and Doug Jones.
